Stress over your tresses

Do you face bad hair days more often during the monsoons? Try these measures to free yourself of hair woes in this season.

As much as you would like to get drenched during the monsoons, remember that rains can wreak havoc on your hair by making them frizzy, limp and lacklustre. Trichologist Dr Apoorva Shah says, “Hair care is extremely essential during this season. Rain water can be toxic for your hair because of the environmental pollutants present in the atmosphere.” With these measures, you can ensure that your hair stays healthy and beautiful during this wet season.

Keep it simple
During monsoons, avoid hairstyles that require your hair to be straightened or curled as high levels of humidity can make your hair go limp. “Try not to use hair sprays and gels as the gum can stick to the scalp causing dandruff,” says Shah. If your hair gets wet in the monsoon shower, towel dry it but avoid rough back and forth motions.

Fuss over the frizz
Since the frequency of hair washes increase during monsoon months, it is important to use the right kind of shampoo. Says Dr Ashok Batra, “Oiling your hair with olive oil, and washing it, at least thrice a week, with lukewarm water is advisable. Choose a mild shampoo that has natural active ingredients rather than lathering shampoos as the latter can make your hair brittle. A shampoo that matches the pH balance of the scalp is the mildest and safest to use frequently.”
Frizzy hair is the most common problem found among women during the rains, so conditioning your hair thrice a week is essential. “One should use anti-frizz serums after every wash. For a more long-lasting result, one can also opt for formaldehyde free keratin hair treatment. Use anti-frizz mask for deep conditioning. Leave on a conditioner which is mild on hair. It protects your hair by forming a coat over it and helps keep its pH balance intact,” says hair expert Shailesh Moolya.
Opt for a wise diet
Nutritionist Venu Adhiya Hirani says that an overall balanced diet comprising fruits and vegetables, whole grains, eggs, etc helps in keeping your hair healthy. “Nuts and oil seeds such as walnuts, sunflower seeds and flax seeds are good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, Bitamin E and biotin, all of which help protect against hair damage,” says Hirani.
Having citrus fruits and juices rich in Vitamin C and use of Vitamin B complex that has anti-viral properties also helps in strengthening your hair, say experts.

Prevent hair infections
According to Shah, a common cold infection could also lead to hair infection during this season. “A cold virus can pass excess mucus and toxins to other parts of your body including your scalp, which is host to your hair roots. This could lead to sudden hair shedding. It may become lank, greasy or dry but these effects are temporary and will stop once the cold virus has been cleared from your body,” he says. Prepare anti-frizz hair mask at home

Mix half a cup of honey, half a cup of yogurt and one tablespoon of almond oil
Massage the mixture into hair from roots to ends.

Let the mask sit for 20 minutes before washing out with natural shampoo.

In case, you get wet in the rain, first try and squeeze out as much water from your hair as you can and then towel dry your hair. Keeping your hair wet during this season can cause dandruff and hair fall.
